Food businesses often grow product by product, and each new range needs a name of its own.
Organico Realfoods came to The Trademark Helpline in 2014 to protect names from its food range across Europe. Alastair Brown, the company’s Development Director, was our contact.
WILD THING
We filed an EU trademark application for WILD THING on 24 June 2014. At the time, a single EU registration covered every member state, the UK included. The application covered Class 29: fish and shellfish, cured and dried meats, preserved and processed vegetables, and meat and fish snacks. It was published in August 2014.
FISH 4 EVER
A second EU application, for FISH 4 EVER, followed on 2 September 2014. It covered:
- Class 29: fish, meat, vegetables and prepared fruits
- Class 30: cereal and fruit bars, biscuits, coffee, tea, confectionery and similar goods
- Class 35: advertising, wholesale and retail services
It was published in September 2014 and registered on 2 January 2015.
Adding monitoring
While the applications went through, we talked Alastair through trademark monitoring: what it watches for, and what happens when a report finds something. In September 2014 Organico Realfoods signed up to our monthly monitoring service, and by January 2015 it covered both the Organico and WILD THING names.
Through two oppositions
After publication, WILD THING attracted two oppositions at the EU office. We kept Alastair updated through the opposition stage, and WILD THING was registered on 26 November 2015.
What Alastair said
“The Trademark Helpline provide clear advice with efficient and solid follow-up – They do a great job in the fundamentally important area of Intellectual Property protection. We have also just signed up for the monthly Monitoring Service and are delighted with the low-cost, professional risk management and peace of mind that this service provides.”

What this means for you
If you sell food under more than one brand, each name needs its own protection, and some will need it abroad: see international trademark registration. Trademark monitoring tells you when someone files something close, and if your own application is challenged, we can help with oppositions.
