What are the main types of intellectual property?

The main types each protect something different. A trademark protects what a business is called, such as its name or logo, in specific classes of goods and services. Copyright protects created works such as text, images and music, automatically and without registration. A registered design protects how a product looks, and a patent protects how something works.

Why do accountants, designers and lawyers need to understand trademarks?

Their clients' names, logos and taglines are often among the most valuable things the business owns, yet many owners assume a company registration or a domain protects them, and it does not. Advisers who understand trademarks can spot the risk early, before a client invests in branding or a buyer's due diligence finds the brand is unprotected.
