The smoothest trademark applications are the ones where the hard questions are answered before you file.

A search first

Before filing anything, we searched the register for earlier marks that could cause a problem. The search report found none.

That matters because the IPO runs its own search during examination. If it finds a similar earlier mark, the application can be delayed or opposed. Searching first gives you the same view in advance.

Choosing the right class

We filed a UK application for DXG MEDIA as a word mark on 17 March 2014 in Class 40, covering:

• digital, lithographic and screen printing
• printing documents, photographs and pictures from digital media
• digital on-demand printing of books and other documents

A word mark protects the name itself, whatever font or logo it appears in.

Accepted without objection

On 14 April 2014 the examiner confirmed the application met the requirements. It was published on 18 April 2014, and DXG MEDIA was registered on 27 June 2014. We sent Duarte his registration certificate in July 2014.

Still protected

The registration has since been renewed, and the UK register shows DXG MEDIA in force until March 2034.
