Coming soon – a short walkthrough of this stage.

What's happening at this stage

Once your application is submitted to the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO), it is logged and given a unique application number. This is the official start of your trademark journey, and the filing date is important – it sets your priority over anyone who applies for a similar mark afterwards.

At this point your mark is simply on record. Nothing is protected yet, but your place in the queue is secured.

What to do & be aware of

Common questions

Your name and address are now on the public register, so private companies target you with fee-paying ‘offers’. Most are scams. A representative’s Care of Address keeps your address off the register. More on scams →

You can narrow what you’ve applied for, but you can’t broaden it or swap the mark. That’s why getting it right before filing matters – if you’re unsure, talk to us before the examiner picks it up.

No. The IPO begins examination automatically. If you’re with us, we watch it for you and step in if anything needs a response.

Scam warning

The register is public, so you will receive official-looking letters and emails about your mark. Most are scams. Do not pay or reply to anything before checking with us — genuine updates appear on your Temmy portal, and we keep a directory of known scams.
