Trademark classes are the categories of goods and services your trademark will cover. There are 45 classes in total: 34 for goods and 11 for services.
The important point is that a trademark does not protect your name in every possible context. It protects the name, logo or other mark for the specific goods and services you claim when you apply.
Why the terms inside each class matter
A lot of businesses choose their name carefully, then choose classes in the final few minutes before submitting an application. That can create a costly gap. Classes are broad categories, but the individual terms within them define what you are actually claiming protection for.
For example, a business may sell clothing, operate an online retail store and plan to launch downloadable software. Those activities may sit in different classes. Choosing only one because it sounds closest to the business name or product can leave important parts of the operation unprotected.
Can you add classes later?
You can remove goods, services or classes from an application later. You cannot add to a filed application. If you later realise you missed something important, you usually need a new application, another fee and another waiting period, while the gap remains open.
How TMH helps you choose
TMH helps clients select classes and terms based on what they sell now, what they realistically plan to sell, and where the brand could create commercial value. Our Trademark Classes guide explains all 45 classes and why the wording matters. You can also use our Classes and Terms Builder for a useful starting point.
The result is a trademark application built around the business you are actually creating, rather than a registration that looks reassuring but fails to cover what matters.
If your brand is important to your plans, use the Class Builder first, then let us check that the classes and terms give you sensible protection before you commit to filing.
