What your report shows you
The companies in your sector holding registered trademarks, and how many each one owns.
The goods and services classes your industry files in most, so you can see what you would likely need.
Your sector measured against the all industry average, so you know if you are ahead or behind.
The register tells you what your competitors already know
Filing behaviour is evidence, not opinion. If most established companies in your sector hold marks in the same two or three classes, that is a strong signal of where the commercial risk actually sits. It also shows you what protection looks like at the size you are growing into.
Goods and services classes, explained
A UK trademark does not protect your name everywhere. It protects it for the things you actually sell. To manage that, the register is divided into 45 classes. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services.
This is why two businesses can sometimes share a name quite happily. A national sportswear brand and a local pharmacy could both trade under the same word, because no customer would confuse a running shoe with a prescription. Equally, it is why filing in the wrong class can leave you exposed in the one place that matters.
Seeing which classes your sector registers is the quickest way to understand what you would need to cover if you applied.
This is a view of your sector, so treat it as a first step rather than a full audit. It does not clear your specific name for use, and it does not check Companies House, domain names or social media. Official fees are non-refundable, so before anyone files we always advise a full Trademark Audit and Consultation. If we think your application would not succeed, we will tell you.
Common questions
How many trademark classes are there in the UK?
There are 45. Classes 1 to 34 cover goods and classes 35 to 45 cover services. Your registration only protects you in the classes you actually apply for.
Is this a full trademark search?
No. It shows how your sector behaves on the register. It is a first step, not a full audit, and we always advise a proper audit before you file.
Does a Companies House registration protect my brand?
No. The two do different jobs. Companies House records your company name, whilst a trademark protects the brand you trade under.
Can two businesses have the same name?
Often yes, where they sit in different classes and no customer would confuse them. That is exactly what the class system is for.
