Why a trademark search matters
Before you spend time or money on a name, logo, tagline, sound or design, it’s worth starting with a free trademark search. If your brand is unique, you can register it as a trademark. That makes the name, image, tagline or sound something you officially own, and something you can enforce:
✓Take down social media accounts that misuse your brand
✓Take down copycat and impersonator websites
✓Stop others registering a name that’s confusingly similar to yours
It works both ways, though. If you skip the research, you might miss someone who already owns the name, and end up having to rebrand later. That gets expensive, and you lose the goodwill you’ve built with your customers. A quick search gives you the confidence to move forward, even if you’re not ready to register just yet.
What is our free trademark search?
It’s an initial look over the UK Intellectual Property Office trademark register. If something shows up in the UK, it’s worth looking into before you spend on wider checks like Companies House, domain names and social media. Whether you’re registering for the first time or thinking about expanding, it’s an early sense check that saves you time, money and stress.
What if we spot a potential conflict?
Try not to panic. A similar name or logo doesn’t automatically mean there’s a conflict. Trademark law is really about preventing confusion for customers. It stops others trading on your good name, and protects you from the damage someone could do by impersonating you.
Not every match is a conflict
If footballer Michael Owen registered his name for sportswear, hardly anyone would assume that “Michael Owen’s Pharmacy” in a local village had anything to do with him. Two different worlds, no confusion.
That’s exactly what trademark classes and terms are for. They set out the goods and services your mark covers. There are 45 classes in the UK, each with lots of terms, and the more specific and genuine your application is, the stronger the protection you’ll get.
Why we offer a free trademark search
This search is here to catch the obvious issues early on. If nothing jumps out, the sensible next step is a proper brand audit and a chat with one of our team. Picking up on conflicts early helps you avoid wasted Official Fees, rebranding costs and delays. And where it makes sense, it gives us the chance to approach a potential conflict before you file.

Trademark search questions
Honestly, it’s the cheapest way to avoid a very expensive mistake. If you spot an existing or similar name before you invest, you can change direction early, rather than rebranding once you’ve built up customers and goodwill.
It’s an initial screening of the UK Intellectual Property Office register. It brings up the most obvious identical or similar names, so you get a quick, early sense of whether yours is clear to go after.
Classes set out the goods and services your mark covers. There are 45 in the UK, each with plenty of terms. Two identical names can often sit happily in different classes, which is why not every match is actually a conflict.
If you’re on a budget, it’s certainly better than doing nothing. But it’s only the first step, not a full trademark audit. We always recommend comprehensive Audit and Advice before you submit an application, as it covers all the key areas you need to think about before parting with money for Official Fees, which are non-refundable.
Not quite. The free search picks up obvious issues on the UK register. A brand audit goes much wider, covering international registers, Companies House, domains and social media, along with expert advice on what the risks really mean for you.
Try not to worry. A similar name isn’t automatically a problem. We’ll help you work out whether it’s a genuine conflict, and where it’s appropriate, we can look at approaching the other party before any application goes in.
